Author/Illustrator Inspired by Alberta farm life in new Pro-gopher Picture Book

New Author Mike Boldt is thrilled that his picture book about farmers and gophers is sending a positive message about how to work together as times change and it gets tougher in this world to share space

EDMONTON, AB, CANADA, June 09, 2010 /Books PR News/ -- When someone says the word 'gopher' in Western Canada, the response is either "Awww, cute," or "Get rid of them." People, especially farmers, either view gophers as a pleasant addition to their property or as a nuisance. Author/Illustrator Mike Boldt views gophers as a source of inspiration for his new picture book The Gophers in Farmer Burrows' Field.

"I was inspired by my childhood growing up in rural Alberta and observing farm life. I think animals have a great sense of humour, and my story is a light-hearted and hilarious tale of what would happen if gophers decided to become artists instead of intruders," says Mike Boldt, who also illustrated the book.

The Gophers in Farmer Burrows' Field acknowledges the problems gophers can bring to farmland, including crops being eaten, holes in fields that are hazards for cows, and the chaos they cause on a farm. But Mike chooses to have his characters work together for an outcome that everyone can benefit from.

"As a writer and illustrator, I have the best of both worlds. I can write funny stories about the world around us, and I can show my readers what is possible if they want to be creative. I really couldn't ask for a better job," says Boldt.

The picture book has been receiving great reviews from schools and bookstores, and his success has spawned his unique Stacktastic contest- where children enter a photo, illustration, etc... to stack items like the gophers in the book. He has also launched the Scribblers for Life Tour which finds him teaching school age children everything from how to write and illustrate a book, to introducing them to the world of digital illustration- including how to use a wacom tablet and the latest in technology for creating books and pictures.

Mike Boldt is an accomplished illustrator and has been published in several books, video games, comics, and has worked in toy design. The Gophers in Farm Burrows' Field is his first book as both writer and illustrator.
