Unheard Voices - Are Rural Authors Being Ignored?
New writers' group to highlight work of Northern Alberta authors.
MANNING, AB, February 12, 2011 /Books PR News/ -- How many of you have heard about Manning, Alberta? Did you know that there is a prolific writer residing there that has been interviewed across Canada for her books? Probably not, because rural writers are largely ignored unless they have some kind of official representation.
In Alberta, the Peace River and Athabasca areas are rarely chosen as spots to hold Guild meetings or book events. Why is this? Is it because of a lower population, too much travel time, or is it just that writing communities don't want to reach out that far?
"I think it's because in general, publishers and writing groups don't understand how isolated writers of the north can be. They don't realize that as artists, we need the same resources to get our books published as those in the larger cities. With technology these days it's getting a little easier to get the word out about our work, but no one is knocking down our doors for the next best-seller," says Beverly Lein, the author of An Elk in the House (NeWest Press) based in the Peace River area.
Fortunately, a new group called the Northern Alberta Writers and Authors Group has been formed by author Dianne Tchir to get the word out and unite lesser known writers in all provinces that have, until this point, been unseen by the larger Associations and Guilds. The Writers Guild of Alberta is helping to advertise the event.
"I'm hoping that our work will start to receive as much recognition by the press and writer's group as other mainstream ones do. We really want to connect as much as we can with them, and this should be a good first step," says Beverly, who will be reading from one of her books at the event.
The first meeting of the NAWAG will be held on February 19th, 1-4pm at the Rotary Club in the Slave Lake Library.
