15 St. Louis Inner-City Kids turned into Published Authors through summer camp program.
The Risen Foundation turns 15 Inner-City Youth from North St. Louis into Published Authors through the "Risen Publishing Camp 4 Kids" this summer as part of Yeatman - Liddell Middle School's summer school program.
ST. LOUIS, MO, July 13, 2011 /Books PR News/ -- 15 inner city youth ranging from 9 years old to 14 years old participated in The Risen Foundation's "RISEN Publishing Camp 4 Kids" this summer at Yeatman - Middle School through a partnership with Impact St. Louis. The RISEN Publishing Camp 4 Kids was a 4 weeks program that ran from June 13th to July 8th that turned participants into Published Authors.
The campers learned multiple writing styles and the fundamentals of book publishing all while penning their own books. Each camper completed the program with honors and will be rewarded with a copy of their newly published book during their graduation ceremony at the Schafly Library Branch on Saturday, July 23rd from 3pm - 5pm. The campers will also be honored with congratulatory letters from United States Senator Claire McCaskill and Lewis Reed, President of the St. Louis Board of Aldermen during their graduation ceremony.
Since the completion of camp these Jr. Authors has been gaining real life experience of what it is really like being a published author. On Friday, July 8th they were recognized by President Lewis Reed and Alderwoman Marlene Davis at the St. Louis City Board of Aldermen meeting at City Hall and on Saturday July 9th they read excerpts from their finished manuscripts to Barnes and Nobles patrons at the Barnes and Nobles Ladue Crossings location. They have been invited to speak at the Psi Beta Sigma Scholarship Banquet on July 30th in St. Louis and have received invitations to travel to New York City and Atlanta, GA as guest authors.
"All children are capable of achieving greatness if we present great opportunities to them," stated Anthony M. McDonald, Sr., Founder & Executive Director of The Risen Foundation. The Risen Foundation is a Missouri Non-Profit Organization that was founded by local Author, Anthony M. McDonald, Sr. to develop accelerated educational programs for school age children regardless of race, gender or social or economic status.
The campers were given the task to write about substance abuse or mental health and how it affects their community. Each camper selected their own genre; mystery, fiction, non-fiction, self-help. Camper's books will be released on July 23rd worldwide on Amazon.com, BarnesandNobles.com and through selected book retailers. Campers will also be sending an autographed copy of their books to the students of Kieni Kia Ndege Primary School in Meru County, Kenya, Africa.
